Church Wilne 9th Annual Horse Ride

Once again the weather was kind to us, in fact with the lack of recent rain the fields were quite hard under hoof but the horses appeared to have no problems. As usual the local farmers deserve a big thank you for letting us form a ride through an area not usually available to the public.

In all 222 horses rode the course of which 64 entered on the day and we were pleased to have 72 marshals which contributed to the smooth running of the event. £148 was collected in buckets at the car park and £130 came from sales at the Beer tent.
All proceeds, £8,000 in total, will go to the Children’s and Derbyshire Air Ambulance split 50/50.

Boost for three local charities

Boost for three local charities

Car Show 2Record proceeds from a Classic Car and Bike Show held at Renishaw Hall last June have now been shared out between three worthy local charities. The annual event, organised by the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, this year raised over £7,000 resulting in healthy donations of £2,350 each being made to Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.
Chesterfield Rotary president John Roberts presented the cheques at a special ceremony held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 12 September to representative of the three charities. Also in attendance was Tony Cordin, group operations director of Autoworld, the charity event’s main sponsor.

Main organiser, past president Stuart Bradley said: “There was a record turnout for the 2014 event which means Rotary this year is able to make another significant donation to these three deserving local charities.”

He added: “Renishaw Hall is the perfect venue for this annual charitable event which we have run successfully for several years, raising thousands of pounds in support of these important local charities.”

Ester Price from Ashgate Hospice reported that even more patients were being cared for and a new £1 million appeal was due to be launched in October. The aim is to raise funds to cover a £250,000 a year budget deficit for the next two years, and £500k needed for urgent building maintenance work on the original grade II listed building, which is believed to date back to 1674.

Helen Mower from Bluebell Wood reported that the donation would fund one month of children’s activities in the messy play room; a room which is bursting with fun, games, arts and crafts, painting, and sensory play with activity coordinators.

Lucy King from Weston Park reported that the Cancer Hospital Charity was this year celebrating its 20th anniversary and was thankful to the many supporters who had helped raise over £16 million in that time. Weston Park is a leading centre for pioneering cancer research, treatment and care that provides vital services for the 60,000 cancer patients in this region.

Steve’s Scribbles

District Governor Stephen Lawes

District Governor Stephen Lawes

Well another Rotary year has started and the wheel keeps on turning.  It has been two weeks since IPDG Peter handed the chain across at a District Handover, and I was honoured to take up the mantle for this coming year.

Since then I have been busy with Official and Informal Club visits, I have already met many of the hard working Rotarians of the District, and I have heard about the many projects that they intend to undertake.  I have been accompanied by members of my home club who have acted as duty driver and I hope that they too will see the wider picture of Rotary within D1220.

I believe that communications is the key to success and to this extent it is my intention to write a short newsletter each month which will be enhanced by “The Blog” so that everyone in the District can learn what is going on and to see the antics of the DG.

We face some great challenges both this year and in the future, the biggest of which is the declining membership within Rotary.  How we do this will not be easy, and I urge you all to try and look at ways of ensuring the name of Rotary will be as strong as ever in D1220 in the future. I would also like to emphasise that the District Team is not there to dictate, we are there to help and assist where ever we can.  Sometimes the message to clubs from district can seem autocratic, however on many occasions we are only relaying instructions from RI and RIBI. I personally wish to get away from the image that has built up over the years of us and them; we are, after all, Rotarians just trying to serve.

Finally, I would like to remind you about Conference which will be held on the week-end of 3rd to 5th October in Llandudno.  The team have been working hard to put together a very good programme for your entertainment.  There is an excellent web page on Conference with information on what is happening and with a link to electronic registration should you wish to do so.  Jan and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Have a good year of Fellowship and Fun as we ‘Light Up Rotary’ in D1220.

Steve

District Governor 2014-15

Rob Caskie Talks About South Pole Explorers

Rob Caskie Talks About South Pole Explorers

Many Rotarians enjoyed Rob Caskie’s talk on The Anglo-Zulu Wars last year and he is returning in October to Long Eaton. This time he will enthral us with stories about the intrepid explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton and their contrasting but heroic attempts to reach the South Pole.

The talk will take place on Thursday 16th October 2014 at The Chatsworth Arts Centre in Long Eaton, commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12.50 and all profits go to End Polio Now.

As tickets sold out well ahead of last year’s event, anyone interested in hearing Rob on his brief visit to the UK should contact Paul Burrows as soon as possible on 07539 228682 or via email at p.burrows37@ntlworld.com

Consider Fellowships

Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship

Welcome, Rotarian wine enthusiasts, to the Wine Appreciation Fellowship. We invite you to join one of the most enjoyable, wine related groups in existence. Our objective is to learn more about wine, wine and food pairings and any other topics related to the appreciation of wine so that good wine will be enhanced. We will accomplish that by sharing our own knowledge and experiences and by learning from the many wine experts and knowledgeable Rotarians throughout the world.

We want you to become actively involved in our fellowship and to share your tasting notes and wine experiences. The Wine Appreciation Fellowship is a wonderful learning tool for those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and sharing ideas regarding all aspects of wine appreciation.

The fellowship has an email newsletter and members are encouraged to visit our interactive wine website frequently for updates, features, articles and information on wine events and trips. Annual meetings are held at the RI International Conventions. Correspondence will be accomplished primarily by email. We look forward to having many new members and fellow wine enthusiasts. We also encourage our members to form RWAF local chapters in their areas of the world and to do service projects.

In Vino Veritas,
Conrad C. Heede, PDG
President
