The Rotary Foundation

Doing Good in the World

The Rotary Foundation is the charitable heart of Rotary. It exists to help Rotarians turn generosity into meaningful action, supporting projects that improve lives both locally and around the world.

Every donation made to the Foundation helps fund sustainable projects that promote peace, improve health, support education, protect the environment, provide clean water and sanitation, and strengthen communities.

Whether it’s providing equipment for a local charity, improving schools overseas, or supporting Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate polio, the Foundation enables Rotary members to make a lasting difference.

Our Only Official Charity

The Rotary Foundation is Rotary International’s official charity and is supported by Rotarians across the world.

Every contribution helps create opportunities that individual clubs could rarely achieve alone. By combining donations globally, Rotary can tackle some of the world’s biggest humanitarian challenges while also supporting projects closer to home.

How Your Donations Make a Difference

Many people ask, “Where does the money go?”

When clubs and members donate to The Rotary Foundation, those funds are carefully invested over a three-year cycle. This allows investment income to help maximise the impact of every contribution.

After three years:

  • 47.5% returns to the district as District Designated Funds (DDF), which can be used to support local and district-led projects.
  • 47.5% goes into Rotary’s World Fund, supporting larger international grants and humanitarian programmes.
  • Around 5% is used to administer The Rotary Foundation, ensuring projects are properly managed and monitored.

This model means every donation works twice – supporting both local communities and life-changing projects around the world.

Supporting Rotary District 1220

Each year, Rotary District 1220 receives funding back from The Rotary Foundation based on donations made by clubs and members three years earlier.

These District Designated Funds allow clubs to apply for District Grants, helping turn great ideas into real community projects.

Grants have been used to support initiatives such as:

  • Community kitchens
  • Hospice equipment
  • School improvements
  • Disability and inclusion projects
  • Youth education
  • Health and wellbeing programmes
  • International sanitation projects
  • Educational resources for schools around the world

The examples within the District Foundation presentation demonstrate how Rotary clubs across District 1220 have used Foundation funding to support communities both locally and internationally.

Rotary's Areas of Focus

Every Foundation project contributes to one or more of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus:

  • 🕊️ Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention
  • 💧 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
  • 👩‍⚕️ Disease Prevention and Treatment
  • 👶 Maternal and Child Health
  • 📚 Basic Education and Literacy
  • 📈 Community Economic Development
  • 🌱 Protecting the Environment

These priorities help ensure Rotary projects create sustainable, measurable impact.

Ending Polio Forever

One of the Rotary Foundation’s greatest achievements is leading the global effort to eradicate polio.

Working alongside organisations including the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Gates Foundation, Rotary has helped reduce polio cases by more than 99.9% since the campaign began.

Rotarians continue to volunteer, raise awareness and fund vaccination programmes until polio becomes only the second human disease ever eradicated.

Ending Polio Forever

Every donation, no matter the size, helps Rotary create lasting change.

You can support The Rotary Foundation by:

  • Becoming a regular Foundation donor
  • Making a one-off contribution
  • Supporting your local Rotary Club’s fundraising events
  • Leaving a legacy gift
  • Encouraging others to learn about Rotary’s work

Together, we can continue to create hope, strengthen communities and improve lives across the world.
