Welcome to this Youth Services update with dates on the website to help you plan for 2017- 2018. Last year we ran very successful District events as well as hosting the Regional Young Chef competition. We hope to encourage more clubs to participate in the forthcoming year. I aim to get information on all the district activities on the District website by the end of July so keep checking.

You will also see there the names of the various event organisers. Please contact them in the first instance if you have queries which cannot be answered by accessing the website. I remain available for any unanswered queries as well as general support re Youth Activities. Just email me on the address above and I will respond ASAP and will always be happy to take phone calls. I have been asked by RIBI to request that you use your district coordinators for all queries rather than going directly to RIBI who are swamped with phone calls!

Just some brief updates of District events that we hope clubs will support;

Young Chef – contact schools now to get them interested. This is a very high standard event and popular with schools and clubs that have participated.

Young Musician – we had a great new style District event. Entry by MP3 recording for audition worked well. Don’t worry if you have no clue how to do this – the Young people are experts! Please note this is not the elitist event that some people think. Our Junior Instrumental winner came from one of the most deprived schools in the area and not all the competitors had private music lessons. We also host the Regional event this year so we need a good representation from our District.

RYLA – we have 2 opportunities for these excellent residential programmes. Buxton is for school years 8,9,10 and Castleton is for years 10,11,12 (must be under 18 at time of the course. Castleton dates to be confirmed shortly. Last year Buxton was undersubscribed and Castleton cancelled for lack of interest. This is disappointing, and remember – if you don’t use it you will lose it!

Youth Speaks – we hope to reintroduce this as some clubs are interested. Please contact me ASAP if your club wants to participate.

5 a side Football – Again undersubscribed despite being an excellent event. Surely we can find a local team to participate – just go down to the local playing fields!

Young photographer and Young Writer are very efficiently organised by our team and we have had successful entries. Some clubs are regular entrants but clubs should consider these events.

Youth Exchange – we are renewing our participation in this and we will concentrate initially on under 18 Youth Camps and exchanges. Contact Cas Francis if you are interested.

I know that some clubs are very active locally and don’t want to participate in District events and I respect that, however, I would be keen to know what events you are doing if only to pinch your ideas for other clubs! Please do let me know if you are running an event.

So finally, best of luck for a good year of Youth Activities. Youth is hard work, schools are difficult to engage so think of other youth groups such as Guides, Scouts, and the uniformed cadet services who will often rush to take advantage of anything on offer. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Kind Regards
