South Yorkshire and East Midlands ‘Hear’ from Rotary Hearing Ambassadors

Rotary Hearing Ambassadors are on a mission to help meeting and event organisers communicate better with those who have hearing loss.

Hearing Ambassadors recently held their first session to promote good practises across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, as the hard of hearing are often disadvantaged when in formal groups, meetings and events.

Fifteen volunteers, mainly Rotarians, from across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire from Doncaster in the North to Burton in the south attended. The venue just off M1 Junction 28 South In Derbyshire was fairly central. and the group included one non Rotarian, an audiologist from Sheffield.

Burton Rotarian and Hearing Ambassador trainer, Rosie Dixon, lead the session which including exercises such as, ‘Chinese whispers’ with interesting, telling and very useful results noted by the volunteers. Sitting back to back to have a conversation demonstrated hearing loss issues. The ‘Hearing Ambassador’ volunteers Rotarians together with the audiologist from Sheffield had their awareness raised and shown techniques of good practise to demonstrate to others, including best use of sound systems and microphones.

Hearing Ambassador Trustee Gillian Campbell of the Rotary Club of Hope Valley, Derbyshire, whose husband Andrew as significant hearing loss, said, “It’s really is about being aware of the isolating effects of hearing loss; being open to the needs of hearing impaired; and being patient and thoughtful when speaking to people who may include those with heating loss.”

At the end of the session members were each given a Rotary Hearing Ambassadors badge as they go out into the regions to promote hearing awareness both at Rotary Clubs and other organisations in their area using a presentation pack prepared by Rotary Hearing Ambassadors.

Planting a Tree for Liam

Rotherham Sitwell Rotary Club, together with Rotherham Round Table, have been able to support the family of seven year old Liam Allen who tragically died unexpectedly last November. Our Clubs funded an oak tree which the family planted on the Longshaw Estate in the Peak District National Park as a lasting tribute to him.

We enabled his parents Paula and Dave and their four young children to stay overnight nearby where they marked what would have been Liam’s eighth birthday. This area is one of their favourite beauty spots and the young family will be able to visit ‘Liam’s Tree’ to see it grow.

The family has been greatly comforted by the support we have been able to give and send their heartfelt thanks.

Epworth new members

RC Epworth and Isle of Axholme were able to introduce two new members this month. Nick and Sue, pictured below with President Richard Vergette.

Left to Right: Nick, Sue and President Richard

Nick says “As I approached and then reached retirement it was time for me to reflect on how I can look to give something back to our communities. Having been a member of Rotary before and with some family history of Rotarian membership, this seemed a good place to start. The Epworth Group have been very welcoming and, although small in number, seem to deliver some great results for such a small team. I look forward to joining this team and helping them deliver more success.”

Rotary Amber Valley along with District  1220 have helped provide additional equipment to Amber Valley Gymnastics Academy.

The new vault run, spring board and vault will help young people from around Derbyshire progress to national and international standards.

Amber Valley donated £500 with a further £500 from District funds. President Howard Doran presented a cheque for just over £1000 to Jenny Clay, Performance Director who said, “Support  from Rotary will help in the development our talented young people.”

David said, “Rotary have an emphasis on supporting young people and seeing these young people performing I feel I have been at an Olympic Games performance. What a fantastic advert for young people in Amber Valley and Derbyshire.”

Storm Ciara versus Epworth Tea Party

What could possibly go wrong? The cakes were baked, the hall and the entertainment were booked, the invitations to our annual Senior Citizens tea party had gone out, we had left nothing to chance. But we couldn’t have predicted the extremes of the great British weather! Storm Ciara had caused a power cut which meant it was impossible to heat and light the hall, make tea or provide our entertainer (Marina Mae) with electricity for her amplifier.

Nevertheless our doughty members of the Rotary Club of Epworth and Isle of Axhome snatched triumph from the jaws of disaster by carrying out and impromptu ‘tea-run’!

Having made mountains of sandwiches, numerous cakes and a bucket of trifle we weren’t going to let the Senior Citizens go hungry. So the teas were plated and dispatched in short order. For only the second time in our history have we had to cancel the tea party, but the teas were duly delivered.

Many thanks to all the members for their efforts today and to friends of Rotary, Peter and Anne Broster, and Tim Mitchell.
