The Aquabox depot is bare

The Aquabox depot is bare

WE HAVE DESPATCHED 1900 BOX ‘GOLDS’ IN JUST 5 WEEKS. NOW THE DEPOT IS BARE….

Thanks to the efforts of our more local volunteers, and of our supporters from around the UK and the wider world, we have emptied the depot of Aquabox ‘Golds’.

Perhaps you saw Rtn Mike Tomlinson, Chair of Aquabox trustees, on a recent BBC tv East Midlands Today report on the work of the charity.

In the last week, another 500 have been despatched to the Lebanon for aid to refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict. (That a total of 1500 ‘Golds’ and 60 Community Filters now shipped to aid Syrian people, both in the refugee camps outside of Syria but also in the country itself.)

We have despatched this week 100 ‘Golds’ to the Cameroons, in partnership with CART – one of our long standing distribution partner organisations.

But, don’t worry – our volunteer packers and Family Filter assembly teams have already started to ‘build back’ our stock, ready for future humanitarian aid shipments, helped most recently by two youngsters who are volunteering at Aquabox as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award community service project.

And we need those boxes. We have requests for Aquaboxes for Rwanda, for Turkey, and we anticipate for those areas of India likely to be soon effected by the typhoon forecast to hit its eastern states.

Lots done. Lots to do. YOU can help by making a donation to Aquabox today. Please see our donation page on the aquabox.org website.

Church Wilne Horse Ride raises over £6,000 for the Air Ambulance

Church Wilne Horse Ride raises over £6,000 for the Air Ambulance

RC Church Wilne’s  first Horse Ride was in 2005 and every year since we have seen a significant sum raised for our designated charity. This year the Air Ambulance was chosen and with over 200 riders and horses taking place, we managed a new record total for the event.

The Air Ambulance is always a very popular charity to support and many people gave extra donations on the day. As in previous years the course consists of bridleway, road and farmland not normally available to the public through scenic Locko Park, Dale Abbey, Spondon and Ockbrook.

Sponsored Swim To Help Kids With Cancer Brought Forward

Sponsored Swim To Help Kids With Cancer Brought Forward

A swimathon by a retired school-teacher to help kids with cancer has been brought forward because his training regime in the build-up has gone so well.

David Windle, aged 69 from Newbold, and a past president of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, is raising vital funds for the Chesterfield based charity Kids ‘N’ Cancer UK by swimming a marathon length 26 miles 385 yards. His sponsored bid will now take place over the week 7-11 October 2013 at Ringwood Hall Hotel Health & Fitness Centre instead of two weeks later as originally planned over the week 21-25 October. So far over £500 has been raised.

Eager David Windle said: “For the last month I have been training four hours a day, everyday, and as I am now ready to go I have brought my swimathon attempt forward to start two weeks earlier from Monday 7 October.”

He added: “I am really looking forward to the swim and am so very grateful to all those who are sponsoring me as this is really all about helping children with cancer.”

David Windle

Although Kids ‘N’ Cancer UK is currently organising one of the biggest fund-raising events to hit the town in June 2014 with the very first Chesterfield & Derbyshire Marathon, David Windle has chosen to do his fund-raising now by swimming a similar length instead of running.

David Windle said:- “I feel I am stronger at swimming that running so decided to raise funds for the charity with a sponsored swim rather than a sponsored run.”

He added: “I raised over £1,000 with a sponsored swim a few years ago in support of Rotary’s ongoing worldwide Polio Plus campaign, which aims to rid the world of polio and, whilst I am still fit enough, I want to do my bit this time to help children with cancer.”

Charity founder Mike Hyman explained: “Kids ’N’ Cancer UK is a charity designed to help children in the UK receive life-saving Proton Therapy treatment for their cancers and tumours.  As some children diagnosed with cancer do not qualify in certain situations for funding by the NHS, the charity and its patrons are determined to assist families caught up in this sad situation of not meeting the criteria, and we will always try to assist families where possible.”

Mike Hyman added: “We are very grateful to David, and all our other fundraisers, as their efforts help towards making our mission possible.”

Top Rotary Honours Awarded

Top Rotary Honours Awarded

Two hard-working former presidents of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield have been awarded the top honours in Rotary. Past presidents John Keeton and Bryan White each received a Paul Harris Fellowship for their continuing efforts and dedication to Rotary in a short ceremony performed by Rotary District Governor Peter Moralee on his official visit to the Chesterfield club on Friday 23 August 2013. The two Rotarians, who were presidents of the Chesterfield club in 2010-11 and 2008/9 respectively, are pictured with their medals and certificates.

Paul Harris was the founder of the worldwide Rotary movement in 1905 and it has since grown into an international phenomenon with more than 1.2 million members across 200 countries. The Rotary Club of Chesterfield was first chartered back in 1922 and, in common with all other Rotary clubs, continues to support the disadvantaged in communities at home and abroad through a variety of projects and initiatives.

District Governor Peter Moralee said: “Rotary is at the heart of every community. In just about every town and city, there is a Rotary club, and its members are passionate about the community in which they live and work.”

President Mike Cudzich-Madry said: “Honouring hard-working members with a Paul Harris Fellowship is a tradition of the Chesterfield club and past presidents John Keeton and Bryan White are the latest rotarians to have deservedly earned that recognition.”

DG Peter M’s Musings – August 2013

DG Peter M’s Musings – August 2013

Peter M’s Musings

Rotary International District 1220

Monthly Newsletter of the District Governor

July 2013.

July has just flown by. It seems like yesterday when IPDG Dave placed the DGs Jewel over my head at the Novotel on 30th June, since then Rotary seems as if I have totally enveloped my life. No complaints though, “what a ride!”

Just wish there were a few more hours in each day or a couple of extra days in the week.

I have, since the first of July, had the pleasure of meeting, “on their home patch”, literally hundreds of friendly and dedicated Rotarians, as I started the schedule of the Official District Governors Visits. I have often been accompanied by a driver from my own Club and delighted to take Carol with me on many occasions.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my Club for their efforts in providing a member to accompany and chauffer me to all the Club Visits outside the ‘Derwent Group’ area. I know they have found the experience, visiting clubs, as interesting and rewarding as I have!

My predecessors have often spoken about the incredible breadth and depth of Service carried out by the Clubs that form our District. I have now seen for myself what they were talking about! I do though ask, “Why do we  keep it to ourselves?” So many of these Projects would be of interest to other Clubs in the District and they may well wish to emulate them in their patch.

Also I know you do not do Service in your community for the plaudits but, Rotary does need the publicity so as to attract those who will follow us into Rotary, those who are going to rise to the challenge and put Service Above Self in the future. Please consider telling the pubic in whatever way is appropriate of the things you do, they, the general public in our communities, are after all are frequently the source of revenue that enables us to carry out our Service Projects, surely they should know where their money is going. Lets tell “our story”!

One of the scariest things I have done this month was to bring greetings and best wishes from all of you to our sisters in Inner Wheel. The event was the Handover and Induction Rally of the Inner Wheel District 22 Chairman 2013-14, Carole O’Conner. Seeing a sea of Ladies, all their best frocks, was enough to frighten even the most hardened mere male!

I hope you are looking forward as much as I am to our District Conference, 4th to 6th October in Scarborough. The Conference Team I know, are all working very hard, under the expert leadership of Conference Director David Curtis, planning to put together a fantastic weekend but, of course, if you are not there it will be all for nothing! So please fill in those Conference Registration Forms either in paper or ‘on line’ and then prepared to be wowed by a weekend to remember!

‘Till next month, keep up your good works!

Now, four months after the last team returned home, a monitoring and evaluation team has gone back to the affected areas to collate information to improve ShelterBox’s overall response by speaking to beneficiaries and collecting their feedback, interviewing in-country partners and assessing the conditions of the ShelterBox aid in the storm-hit areas. Thank you for your continued support!
