Purple Kirkby in Ashfield
Ashfield District Council and Kirkby Rotary Club have been working together to highlight Rotary international’s ‘Eradicate Polio’ campaign.
To raise awareness of the continuing fight against the disease that still affects parts of the developing world, purple crocus bulbs have been planted by pupils at Kirkby’s Morven Park School. The planting took place on October 22nd to coincide with the international Eradicate Polio Day from funding provided by the Council. The ADC Corporate Communications Manager issued a news release and photograph to local media.
President Paul Riley said: “Rotary has been involved in the eradication of polio for around thirty years and the end is now in sight. We are delighted that Ashfield District Council has supported us by supplying the bulbs for the children to plant.”
At the same time, the Council themselves set several thousand of the purple crocus bulbs in Morven Park next to the school. More were planted early this month by pupils at Orchard and Kingsway Primary Schools in Kirkby, with Bracken Hill School following as we go on-line. Rotary Club of Kirkby in Ashfield are also raising funds by selling crocus badges and bags of bulbs.

Leave a Comment (0) →Rotary Club of Dronfield collecting for Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
With just 8 days to go before the start of the 2015 Poppy Appeal the Royal British Legion made an emergency request for somebody to run the Appeal in Dronfield. The incumbent organiser had stood down after many successful years in the role and there was nobody to take on the task.
The club agreed they would take on the task as an emergency project and quickly set about identifying members of the community who had previously help with collections. Two Rotarians collected numerous boxes of Poppies and collecting cans along with other Poppy appeal products such as lapel pins, pens and rulers from the distribution centre. The main supermarkets in Dronfield were approached and three agreed to allow us to sell the range of Poppy products. Forty additional locations where identified including the towns sports centre, doctors surgery, schools, shops and offices. The task of delivering Poppies and collecting cans to these locations was undertaken by Rotarian volunteers.
The towns Army Cadet Force and Air Training Core were enlisted to help with weekend collections at the super markets with weekdays covered by Rotarians and community volunteers.
Once the appeal had closed Rotarian and volunteers came together for a morning to open and count the contents of collecting cans. A grand total of £11,066 was banked into the Poppy Appeal bank account which we felt was an excellent result.

Leave a Comment (0) →AQUABOX pulls out the stops to help the Syrian Refugees
On Wednesday 11th November 500 humanitarian aid packages will be loaded into a 40 foot container bound for Eastern Turkey to provide safe drinking water and alleviate the suffering of the Syrian refugees.
The 500 Aquaboxes which contain an Aquafilter – which turns contaminated water into safe drinking water- along with over 70 items of humanitarian aid, have been assembled and packed by our team of over 80 volunteers at the Aquabox Depot in Wirksworth over the past 2 months.
The Aquabox is designed to support a 5 person family unit and could therefore support 2500 refugees and provide at least 900,000 litres of safe drinking water.
To ensure that the aid reaches those who have the greatest need, boxes will be distributed by our trusted partner Hand in Hand for Syria.
In addition to the Syrian response, Aquabox despatched a further 500 boxes to the Philippines on the 6th November to support families caught up in the typhoon that recently struck the islands.
Aquabox is a Rotary supported community charity based in Wirksworth managed, almost entirely, by volunteers drawn from the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire region. These volunteers come to the Cromford Hill depot 4 days of the week to assemble and test the Aquafilters and to pack the Aquaboxes ready for despatch when a catastrophe strikes.
Aquabox has been in operation for 22 years. During this time it has despatched over 100,000 Aquaboxes to countries and regions of the world where a manmade or natural disaster has struck.

Chesterfield Rotary past-president Stuart Bradley played his part in helping the nation raise a record-breaking £37 million for this year’s Children In Need Appeal. He provided personal transport in his classic 1972 Porsche 911 Targa to enable popular mascot Pudsey Bear visit all the various fund-raising activities being reported live throughout the day by BBC Radio Derby.

Thirteen youngsters from seven local primary schools in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire took part in the annual Junior Verse-Speaking Competition, organised for the 28th year by the Rotary Club of Chesterfield.
There was a very high standard from the competitors making it difficult for the three judges who were, president Kath Bradley and past-president Margaret Mitchell from Chesterfield Inner Wheel, and retired local school teacher Mrs Judy Stone.
Once again there were two categories, for schools with less than 200 pupils, and for bigger schools with more than 200 pupils. An award was given to the runner-up and winner of each category. The overall competition winner was Maria Benney.
The event was kindly hosted by Calow CE Primary School on Thursday 22 October 2015 and the main organiser and compere was past-president David Windle. The schools taking part were:- Barrow Hill Primary School, Calow Church of England (V.C.) Primary School, Duckmanton Primary School, Hady Primary School, Hasland Junior School, New Whittington Community Primary School, and Walton Holymoorside Primary School.

Two local volunteers from Chesterfield have received the ultimate accolade from the Rotary Club of Chesterfield. Mrs Barbara Harrison and Mr David Botham were this year’s joint recipients of the club’s annual Citizen of the Year Award for their unselfish and unstinting charitable service to the local community.
Past-president David Windle, who hosted the award ceremony, said: “Through the charitable work undertaken the two have brought much pleasure to so many people over so many years.”
He also congratulated them on their sterling efforts in leading a Saturday Singalong for the residents of Harehills Court, Grangewood, every week since the home opened 22 years ago. David Windle added: “This is an event that is much loved and eagerly anticipated each week by the enthusiastic participants of the home.”
The two award winners individually expressed their gratitude for the award. Barbara Harrison said: “This was a complete surprise and something I never expected.”
Meanwhile, David Botham said: “This unexpected award by the Rotary Club is so very much appreciated – thank you.”
